World Language

Deerfield Community School 7th and 8th grade students may choose to study beginning French or beginning Spanish. These courses are designed to provide students with a foundation in basic French and Spanish and meet four times a week in 45-minute blocks. Successful completion of the first and second year curriculum at the middle school are equivalent to one year of high school French or Spanish and result in referral to second-year world language in high school.

Students learn strategies for reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary retention. They also participate in a variety of simulated speaking situations to learn to converse in simple sentences. They complete several major projects over the course of two years to learn in more depth about French- or Spanish-speaking cultures.
